'The lion sleeps- rest in peace, Cesar.'   Words attached to Sir Rod Stewart's wreath for Billy McNeill.

The Husband

The transition from priest to layman was a harrowing time for one who had known no other life than that of a cleric. Now, I had to face a world for which I had no training. How was I going to make a living was my priority. But doing what? Then there was the question of women.

For years our seminary priests had warned us about them. They were dangerous creatures and to be avoided like the plague. But all around me now were these alluring creatures holding out the apple for me to bite. But it took four years before I could resist no longer and fell for the charms of the woman who is now my wife. But her colleagues in the Elizabeth Arden salon in London’s Bond Street were concerned about my manhood, when they learned from Louise that after three weeks I still had not kissed her.

At our wedding reception in the Irish Club, Eaton Square, I told our guests that Louise and I had thought of eloping until we realised that we were going to miss out on a lot of gifts. A telegram also was read out from the Arsenal team, courtesy of my friend, George Graham.

Louise and I went on to have two daughters and a son. I was now

...truly a ‘father’.
